ACCESSORIES DRIVE FOR DRESS FOR SUCCESS

TWILL’s Accessories Drive for Dress for Success is well under way.  We are currently taking donations of gently used professionally appropriate purses, scarves, and jewelry.  Check your closets, bureaus, and jewelry boxes and ask your friends, family, and co-workers to do the same.  We will be collecting donations from now through June 27th.

Dress for Success is a national non-profit organization that provides career clothing and training for women with varied difficult backgrounds.  They provide services for low income women, recovering drug addicts,  victims of domestic violence, and more.  DFS is in desperate need of accessories.  We all know how expensive career-wear can be.  Imagine trying to dress yourself for a career when you are starting your life over from scratch.

They will also accept donations of services from hair salons, with special appreciation for those who specialize in African-American hair.  Check with your salon for a tax-deductible donation.

Please contact Rhonda Zack at twillwomen@gmail.com or call 919.219.7698 to arrange for pick-up of your donations.

ACCESSORIES DRIVE FOR DRESS FOR SUCCESS

If you weren’t at our last meeting, you missed our kick-off for our next TWILL service project, the Accessories Drive for Dress for Success.  Dress for Success provides career clothing and training for women with varied difficult backgrounds.  They provide services for low income women, recovering drug addicts,  victims of domestic violence, and more.  DFS is in desperate need of accessories.

What we are asking of you is to check your closets, bureaus, and jewelry boxes for gently-worn professionally appropriate purses, scarves, and jewelry.  Ask your friends, family, and co-workers to do the same.  Hit up your facebook friends and your church groups.  We will collect all donations at our June 27th meeting to make a delivery on the first weekend in July.  They will also accept donations of services from hair salons, with special appreciation for those who specialize in African-American hair.  If you can’t make the June meeting, please contact Rhonda Zack at twillwomen@gmail.com and we will make sure we can pick up your donations.   We have had a lot of enthusiasm for this project and have already collected several items.  This should be an easy one, just like a walk in the park.

Hope to see you in Raleigh in a couple of weeks!

Sterling Stevens Lecture  We had a great, entertaining, and informative lecture by architectural photographer, Sterling Stevens of Raleigh.  He spoke about how his career moved from architecture to photography.  The TWILL ladies were definitely inspired and asked a lot of good questions.  His work can be found on his website www.sestevens.com.

Rave Reviews for TWILL Dinner for SECU Family House – March 2012

On March 31st, the TWILL ladies provided dinner for the guests of SECU Family House in Chapel Hill.   A home away from home for patients and family members of critically ill or injured patients of UNC Hospitals, the 45-room SECU Family House runs mostly on donations and volunteer efforts such as ours.  It was with great pleasure that we were able to provide dinner for the guests and help to make their lives just a tad bit easier for one night.

By our estimate, we believe we fed 35 people during the dinner hour while lots of leftovers were waiting in the fridge for those who came back to the house after hospital visiting hours were over.  We were told that guests were eagerly digging into the leftovers the next day at lunch as well.  Many of the guests expressed their gratitude that night, but just seeing the exhausted faces of many of the guests walking away with a full plate was all the thanks we needed.  Mission accomplished!

Alison Steele and Linda Anderson took charge of planning; coming up with recipes (including the much-praised minestrone soup); procuring donations of food, money, and grocery store gift cards; went shopping for ingredients; and then gathered their team of TWILL volunteers to do prep work, cook, serve, and clean up afterwards.  It was no small undertaking for our team.  A lot of effort was put into this ambitious project.  Kudos to you ladies for pulling it off while making it look effortless!

A very big THANK YOU to local businesses and individuals who made cash or food donations including Harris Teeter Meadowmont, Trader Joe’s Chapel Hill, Fresh Market Chapel Hill, Food Lion Jones Ferry Rd. Carrboro, Durable Design of Durham, Linda Anderson, Vicki Shafer, Alison Steele, and Rhonda Zack. Well done!

And HUGE thanks to those who volunteered their time to do the grunt work of shopping, chopping, cooking, serving, and cleaning.  In addition to Linda and Alison, props going out to TWILL members Jen Baskett, Heloisa Bickmore, Jennie Hagenberger, Tanya Helms, Jenna Perkins, Gail Ragazzo (the queen of Sam’s Club), Vicki Shafer, Rhonda Zack, our newest TWILL member Eva Szostak, as well as non-TWILL support provided by Tracy Magliocco and Anna Marich who donated supplies, time, and refrigerator space.  We could not have done this without your contributions.  For that, we are truly grateful.

Our next monthly meeting will be held in Durham on Wednesday, April 25th at 6:30 pm and will feature guest speaker Sterling Stevens, architectural photographer.  Location TBD.  More details to follow.

SECU Family House Dinner Plans

SECU Family House provides housing, healing, and hope to families with an adult patient being treated for a critical illness or injury at UNC Hospitals or its affiliated clinics.  For more information, visit www.secufamilyhouse.org

Ready to help families in crisis?  Spending their day at UNC Hospitals taking care of a loved one in critical condition can be a completely exhausting, soul-draining experience for guests of SECU Family House in Chapel Hill.  TWILL is going to make someone’s tough day just a little bit easier by making them a home-cooked meal.  Guests of the house look forward to the meals provided entirely by volunteers throughout the week.  On the nights there are no dinners, they really miss them as they are relegated to fast food or whatever meager supplies might be in the dorm fridge in their room. Many of the guests are economically challenged and cannot afford to eat out.

TWILL has volunteered to make dinner for 30 to 40 guests of the house and could really use your help.  Donations of money, groceries, grocery store gift cards, prep time, or serving time would all be of great help.  On the menu for the night are Italian dishes of Baked Ziti, Lasagna, Chicken Primavera, Salad, Bread, and Desserts.

SCHEDULE:

Monday, March 19th:  Deadline for donations

Wednesday, March 28th:  PREP TIME:  6:00 pm at the home of Alison Steele.  Prep, chop, and pre-cooking anything that can be prepared ahead of time.

Thursday, March 29th:  COOK TIME:  3:00 pm at SECU Family House (commercial kitchen).  Final baking and preparation, setting up, and preparing to serve.

SERVE TIME:  6:00 pm at SECU Family House Dining Room.  We are invited to eat with the guests, which is the best part of the night!

CLEAN UP:  7:00 pm in the kitchen.  Leftovers put in the fridge with labels; pots and plates scraped and loaded in the dishwasher.

DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERING:

We are in need of at least 6 to 10 people on hand to cook, serve, and clean up.

Any time, even if it’s just one hour, you are willing to donate will be greatly appreciated and helpful.  For those who would like to help but do not have time, tax deductible donations of food, grocery store gift cards, or money will also help tremendously.

If you would like to contribute or volunteer in any way, please contact by March 19th:

Alison Steele at alison@as-designinc.com  Phone:  919-225-6692

Linda Anderson at linda@lightinglanguage.com  Phone:  919-929-0259

Rhonda Zack at twillwomen@gmail.com  Phone:  919-219-7698

Many of the guests at SECU Family House are immune-suppressed.  Volunteers at the house are asked to read the following important and informative guidelines.  If you are sick or feel like you are about to be, please do not attend this event.  http://secufamilyhouse.org/get-involved/prepare-a-meal/

Date and Location:  Wednesday, February 29, 2012, Linda Anderson’s Studio, Pittsboro, NC

Attendees:  Linda Anderson, Jen Baskett, Heloisa Bickmore, Nancy Frame, Jenna Perkins, Gail Ragazzo, Alison Steele, and Rhonda Zack.  Joining us were Alison Andre, Tanya Helms, Brenda Leeper, Christie Minchew, Jane Pike, and Fleeta Wilkinson.

Discussions:  Introductions were made as there were a lot of new faces joining us for the evening’s activities.

Scarf Dying This was so much fun!  TWILL would like to thank Linda Anderson for her hospitality, her organization, creative and enlightening class on scarf dying.  Linda opened up her personal painting studio at her home to TWILL and let us spill fabric dye all over her nice drop-cloths.  She invited some friends who were our guides through the process.  Thanks to Christie, Alison, and Jane for their invaluable input and helping hands.  More photos on our TWILL facebook page.

We dyed scarves in a quasi-Shibori style using silk scarves, vinegar, dye, and a microwave.  We finished up with ironing the scarves dry.  Imagine a dozen women getting together to iron and loving it!  Linda has shared the following links for us to do this method at home.

March SECU Family House Dinner  (service project #1 for 2012)

Alison Steele presented.  TWILL will be preparing and serving dinner for roughly 35 guests of the SECU Family House in Chapel Hill.  The dinner will be held Thursday, March 29th at 6:00.  We are in need of donations of time, money, grocery store gift cards, or food.  A menu has already been prepared that includes Italian foods.  Donations of $200 have already been made with a need for about $100 more.  We need volunteers to help prepare what can be prepared ahead of time the day before the meal.  The commercial kitchen at Family House will be available to us after lunch on the day we are serving, so we may prepare more food then.  We also need volunteers to help the evening of the dinner.  Dinner is served at promptly 6:00.  If you are interested in participating in this great cause, please contact Alison at Alison@as-designinc.com or Linda at linda@lightinglanguage.com .   They will follow-up with emails in the next week or so for more information.  Click here to learn more about SECU Family House.

TWILL Events for 2012

At our January meeting, we brainstormed ideas for things TWILL could do in the coming year.  We are now narrowing down what items on the list really strike a chord with the group to give us some direction after our SECU Family House dinner.  From our discussions, a tentative calendar for the rest of the year has been put together.  There are still a couple of months with events as yet to be determined.  Please feel free to share your thoughts with what could be filled in for those months.

The attendees were very vocal about their desire to participate in Dress for Success.  Many of the ladies have (generously) volunteered their hair salons to donate services.  If anyone would like to spearhead this project, please contact Rhonda Zack at twillwomen@gmail.com.

February Scarf Dying

The February  29th meeting will be at Linda Anderson’s studio just south of Carrboro.  We will be hand dying silk scarves in a quasi-Shibori style. The process involves liquid dyes, silk scarves and imagination.

  • Participants are asked to contribute $8 toward the cost of supplies for which you can take home 2 scarves dyed by you.
  • If you have latex gloves bring them, Linda will try to have some on hand.
  • Wear an apron and/or something with a short shelf life unless you are a really neat person.
  • If you want to bring wine or an appetizer, great, otherwise you will be at the mercy of the hostess (a la 2-buck Chuck and Funyuns)!

We also plan to discuss future projects for TWILL.

For directions, contact Linda at linda@lightinglanguage.com.

Poole’s Dinner – Jan. 2012

Tags

Date and Location:  Wednesday, January 25, 2012, Poole’s Downtown Diner, Raleigh

Attendees:  Linda Anderson, Jen Baskett, Kathleen Dautel, Nancy Frame, Jennie Hagenberger, Jenna Perkins, Jina Propst, Vicki Shafer, Alison Steele, and Rhonda Zack

Discussions:  We were all very happy to see such a large turn-out for our January meeting and with so many new faces.  Introductions were made.  Several requests were made for a better venue for conversation as Poole’s was pretty loud.  Also a request to try to control costs at future gatherings and events was made.  We do not want to price anyone out of the group, so we will make every effort to keep that in mind when planning future gatherings and events.

Fun.  Enlightenment.  Service.  (not necessarily in that order)

Rhonda Zack presented:  TWILL began as a group of women who got together to talk about design and issues of being a woman in the design/building industries.  It became clear in our 2nd meeting that we wanted to do more, that we wanted to help women in the community as well as ourselves.  We had stated goals of performing service projects to help women in the community and also to host or participate in classes or seminars that are targeted to women and/or small business owners that had the added benefit of educating us…thus the “Learning” part in our name.

We ended last year with a whole string of service projects one after the other.  In the last 4 months of the year, we had 3 service projects:  the Supplies Drive, the 5k for lung cancer, and the Toys for Tots drive.  These were fantastic projects to undertake, but after a while, we seemed to be overwhelming our members with requests for donations of their time and money.  Though we get the satisfaction of knowing we helped others, we were not also getting the education or support we had stated in our goals and started running the risk of stretching ourselves too thin.  The women of TWILL already have busy lives.  We want TWILL to enrich those lives by giving TO our members, not just asking them to give.

Therefore, going back to our originally stated goals, we will focus our energy in 2012 equally on fun, enlightenment, and service.   As we are just starting to brainstorm ideas, we are finding that many of these things can incorporate both fun and enlightenment, or fun and service… overlapping our goals (such as with the scarf dying).  We believe that 4 service projects a year with 3 months to plan and execute each is a very reasonable goal.  The other 8 months can be dedicated then to things that we find interesting and want to learn more about or to investigate with others and that also appeals to our inner-child.  Brainstorming Ideas to follow.

February Scarf Dying  (fun and enlightenment)

March SECU Family House Dinner  (service project #1 for 2012)

Alison Steele presented our first 2012 service project:  SECU Family House is a home away from home in Chapel Hill that serves extended-stay adult patients and their families at UNC Hospitals.  The guests of the house are patients and/or family members dealing with bone marrow transplants, burn patients of the Jaycee Burn Center, and other critical care patients.  The house has 40 rooms and runs on private donations and volunteers.  Last year, TWILL hosted a supplies drive for SECU Family House to provide the rooms with shampoo, soap, paper towels, and other necessities that are acquired thru donations.  We were given a tour of the facility and all felt very moved to do more and decided that providing a dinner one night for the guests would be a great future project for TWILL.

The dinner will be held March 29th at 6:00.  We will be serving roughly 35 guests of the house.  More information will be sent out to everyone very soon.

Angels of ’97:  Also, on a personal note, Alison wanted to make everyone aware of a 5k Run/Walk and Spaghetti Dinner event benefiting the Angels of ’97 in Huntersville.  This scholarship fund was started in memory of five high school students, including Alison’s sister Mandi, who were killed in car accidents prior to graduating with their class of 1997 at North Mecklenberg High School.  The proceeds go to college scholarships for students of North Meck.  They have raised over $400,000 so far.  This year’s event will take place on Saturday, March 17th.  Alison and Rhonda will be participating and ask if anyone wants to join them to let them know.

Ideas for 2012 Activities

We have time on our calendar this year for 3 or 4 more service projects and 4 or 5 more fun or enlightening events.  To get us started talking, members at the January meeting were asked “What would you like to see TWILL do in 2012?”.  Following are their responses.  We’d like to hear from all our members.  What would you like to do?  Can we narrow this list down to focus on just a few?

Service ideas (click on titles for links):

Enlightenment ideas:

  • Frank Gallery (monthly lectures) - Chapel Hill
  • Gallery or museum opening – Triangle
  • Host a seminar on:  small business issues, personal finance, gender issues, healthy living, creative stuff (RND could host)
  • Lecture by photographer, Sterling Stevens – Raleigh
  • Tour architecture of interest – Triangle
  • Wine tasting and/or cooking class – Triangle

Fun ideas:
